Octaves and Decibels

Octaves and Decibels Octaves and Decibels Octaves and Decibels By Maeve Maddox A reader asks: Can you inform on the usage of . . . octave and decible?   I am of the opinion, that octave deals with human voice and decible deals with noise.   Both words, octave and decibel are terms of measurement. Octave derives from the Latin word for â€Å"eight† and decibel incorporates the Latin word for â€Å"ten.† The words can be used in various contexts. I’ll just address the uses suggested by the question. The words bel and decibel are units of measurement of sound intensity. A bel is A unit, equivalent to ten decibels used in the comparison of two levels of power in an electrical communication circuit. A decibel (db) is one tenth of a bel. â€Å"Bel† is a shortening of the name of inventor Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922). A bel is A unit, equivalent to ten decibels, used in the comparison of two levels of power in an electrical communication circuit. An octave in the musical sense is an interval embracing eight notes of the diatonic scale. Think of the Do-re-me song in Sound of Music. Doe- a deer, a female deer Ray- a drop of golden sun Me- a name i call myself Far- a long long way to run Sew- a needle pulling thread La- a note to follow so Tea- a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to do oh oh oh The normal speaking range of the human voice is about 20-50 decibels. Sounds that go above that range become annoying, for example a vacuum cleaner (70 db). Noise becomes painful at 120 db. Sounds above 132 db lead to permanent hearing damage and eardrum rupture. In answer to the question, decibel refers to sound, pleasant or unpleasant, whether it originates in the vocal cords or elsewhere. NOTE: Although both the OED and Merriam-Webster give db as the abbreviation for decibel, Ive been informed by a technical writer that the standard abbreviation is dB. Real-Time Systems Design, Robustness Challanges Research Paper

Real-Time Systems Design, Robustness Challanges - Research Paper Example The essence of this paper is to focus on the challenges faced by these designers and the important methodologies that need to be applied in order to overcome these challenges so as to ensure the robustness of these systems. Keywords: Real time system design, Robustness, Challenges Introduction Real Time System Design can be defined as a combination of protocols and procedures that are aimed at ensuring a system is made efficient to perform its intended task within the deadline prescribed. The efficiency of such a system is based on correct and timely outputs. [1] For a real time system to be considered robust, it should have the ability to handle errors in explicit conditions and also provide bounded responses including the risk severe consequences. This therefore makes the design of such a system to require maximum attention by designers since even a minor deviation can lead to a disaster during the usage of such systems. [3] Most embedded systems have strong real-time constraints, which it is compulsory to take into account in their design and modelling. Twenty year ago, timed automata [6] was introduced for the purpose of ensuring that their finite-state automata is extended with definite-valued clocks, which can be used to specify how much time may elapse between different events in the system. These requirement therefore leads lot of challenges faced by designers in regard to the robustness of these systems [2]. Our research is aimed at illustrating the different scheduling techniques applicable in this area of design so as to overcome the challenges posed by timely disorder. Our goal is that by the end of discussion in this paper, the various challenges that real time systems designers face in their design procedures and in different real time scenarios would have been discussed in their corresponding circumstances and subsequent solutions formulated. Literature Review It is not always easy to come up with robust real-time system design without major chal lenges. A lot of research has been carried out in this field in the quest to analyze the challenges faced by these designers and various solutions that will ensure robustness of the designs suggested. In [5], the authors illustrates the scheduling techniques applied in order to avoid the challenges caused by time constraints in the design. They bring out clearly the aspect of time acting in different real time scenarios to make a system change with respect to the corresponding circumstances. The authors state that the most challenges faced by real-time system designers are in regard to issues of synchronization and predictability. They also address real time tragic scenarios and case studies from the trusted sources that gives the big picture on the cause and the preventive measures. They also propose two methodologies aimed at achieving predictability; synchronization and parallelism as solutions to the challenges faced. Huang, Jinfeng, et al in [2] explains the large gap that exis ts between system design requirements and the achievements that have been the major challenges in systems design. They state that this is eminent in real-time system design since they require strict time schedules and critical safety requirements. The authors suggest that to ensure robustness, there should be an effective way of supporting predictability. The paper also discusses the role of semantics of design languages in supporting predic

Personalities gain their definition form in the contributions that they have made towards the development of an attribute. Factors considered to measure their contribution have been in the placed articles and works that have been erected to honor the contribution made towards development of the attribute. Most sources have provided reference on the information needed to analyze the nature of the personalities through their biography that holds the life contribution and influences. A more distinct meas ure that has been applied to gain knowledge on the contribution of a famous individual has been in the contribution that they made towards a given discipline. In the visual arts perspective, films have advanced to include technological provisions in the creation of advanced effects to accord a superb plot t the images. However, the ideas to create the films have been developed over the decade to include outstanding works that have been liked to their creators. Luis Bunuel has contributed adversely to the improvement of the visual arts and his input has been felt in films produced over the centuries. The creations of pieces to highlight the contributions made within a film have been reflected within the creations of the directors. Luis Bunuel is no exception, and the contributions that he inputted in the cinema development have been reflected in the creation of his films. These pieces have been based on the age that he had represented (1900-1983) (Diaz). Luis chose to reflect the tim e that he had represented and the virtues that had shaped the contributions of the community. This attribute had been the leading contribution towards the completion of the film with the virtues reflected to develop the plot. The inspiration to apply the style that he had used had been witnessed in the works of Fritz Lang and Murnau. The style that he had applied in the completion of film production was reliant on the personalities that inspired Luis to be involved in filmmaking. The style that Luis Applied in the creation of his films incorporated the Surrealism style. The inspiration had been drawn through working with the artist Salvador Dali to experiment on the features available to complete the film creation process. He had made the improvement create visual illusion in the films through using forms that presented ideas unknown to the natural development. The fiction applied in the majority of the films in the modern society has reflected on the provision to create numerous de velopments in their plot development. During his time, these ideologies had not been popular among the creators of the time. Through the creation of images that presented elements that held advanced meanings, Luis was able to be outstanding among other directors. The films that initially implemented the style that he had incorporated in the creation of his pieces like ‘Un Chien Andalou’ and ‘L’Age d’Or,’ observe the surrealistic style of creating the films (Diaz). A Cops Life Essay Example for Free

A Cops Life Essay I use to dream of being a cop , Its really tempting for most of the kids when they see someone in uniform, zooming through the streets in a cruiser with flashing lights .I always thought that to be cop all it takes is a good built and a brave heart .I am sure even for you A cop is a brave good looking person in uniform who helps to keep the city streets crime free , who makes sure that that the violators of traffic gets a ticket . This story I read was a real eye opener for me and changed my way of thinking about a officers job profile completely . I never thought that the officers go through so much emotional trauma while doing their jobs. These men in black are not only brave physically but very brave mentally as well .It’s not an easy job to see a young kid drenched in blood die in your arms and you are so helpless that you can’t save his life . While the officer is waiting for the ambulance its traumatizing because he could remember that kid from the college basketball game or late night traffic check last week. It does not end for him here; he has to give the message of the young guy’s death to his parents. Imagine coming home, and not having the slightest clue to where your teen is, or has been all night. The doorbell finally rings after waiting and waiting for hours, yet it’s not your son or daughter standing in front of you, it’s a deputy officer. It’s obviously hard on the parents to hear about their child dying in a car accident due to a foolish mistake, but it’s harder for a father of two young kids to break it to them. The writer of this story did a phenomenal job in explaining every little detail of the story. From the curve of the highway, to the position of the dead body. I was able to read a single sentence and picture everything in my head right away because of the unique description. This story has a great moral value, as well as the effects on others because of one choice you might make just for the heck of it. Drunk driving isn’t anyone elses fault, and nobody should have to suffer because of a mistake you made.

Basketball :: essays research papers

Basketball Basketball is a great game that is one of the most popular in America. In this sport you have to have good aim to shoot, good jumping skills to rebound, you have to be quick, and also have good ball handling skills. In a real game there are only five players on the court, referees, foul outs, and rules like no running with the ball, no fouling, out of bounds and no running over the other teams players on offense. I really enjoy playing this game and I practice a lot outside on my court and play for P.A.L in the winter. I think I am a pretty good player and dream of playing for the NBA one day. Next year I'm going to play varsity for our school instead of wrestling and try my best to help the team win. If I try really hard and practice everyday I could be an extremely good player. I usually play with my friends after school for fun or just to play around and have a good time, practice on my own to practice things I need work on, or practice with my dad and let him give me some pointers. I love watching basketball games on TV and usually watch the Knicks play. Out of all of the 28 teams in the NBA my favorite teams from best to least favorite are the New York Knicks with Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, John Starks, Charlie Ward, Chris Childs, Charles Oakly, and Allen Houston. Then I like the Charlotte Hornets with Anthony Mason, Tyrone Bouges, Glenn Rice, Gladie Divac, and Curry. My third favorite team is the Seattle Super Sonics with Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Schremph, and Perdue. My fourth and final favorite team is the Orlando Magic with my favorite player Anfernee Hardaway, Horris Grant, and Nick Anderson. My three favorite players in the NBA are: 1)Anfernee Hardaway/ nickname: "Penny" 2)Larry Johnson/nickname: "Grandma" 3)Shawn Kemp/nickname: "Rainman" These players have a lot of talent and I enjoy watching them play. For instance Anfernee is a leader for the team and has good passes, good dribbling, and good shooting skills. While Larry Johnson has good rebounding, pretty good shooting, and good dunking skills. Last but not least Shawn Kemp who has great rebounding and spectacular dunking skills including fancy dunks and great allyoops. I think basketball is a great sport and that it will continue to be

Angelina Jolie Biography

Angelina Jolie Biography Angelina Jolie, born Angelina Jolie Voight on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, is an American actress famous for her tattoos and her acting ability. Jolie, which in French means pretty, was born to an Academy Award-winning actor, Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand with only one brother named James Haven. Just like any other children at her age, she also had a favorite cartoon character that she liked very much, which was the flying elephant Disney character â€Å"Dumbo. † She said that she cried when he was able to fly.Meanwhile, unlike her friends in general, little Jolie had had her own â€Å"different† childhood dream, which was to be a funeral director. Hence, it's not surprising that she has an interest in mortuary science and that she also has lots of â€Å"weird collections,† including her many tattoos and knives collection. Since her age of 11, Jolie attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute before then at her 14 years age started modelling. Later on she was majored in film at New York University after she graduated from Beverly Hills High School at age 16.In the year of 1999, she starred in the film â€Å"Girl, Interrupted,† which was both starred and produced by Winona Ryder, as Lisa Rowe, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Besides, she has also starred in five different movies, all of which directed by her brother James Haven, with whom she's extremely close to and protective of. Their close relationship has, in many times, provoked public rumours that the two had an incest love affair (2000), but Jolie denied the issue and stated the speculation was absolutely false.That being so the show must go on. Despite all the media coverage on her relationship with her brother, Jolie has the letter â€Å"H† tattooed on the inside of her left wrist which is, for her, is a reference to two people she is close to who have this letter in their names: her brot her James Haven, and Timothy Hutton. However, she says the H tattoo stands only for James for she has already broken up with Hutton. Any other tattoos she has in her body include the Japanese sign for death, two pointy black American Indian symbols, a dragon, and a large black cross.The same holds true for her movie career big deal. Jolie, who is able to speak French, is known for her action in some famous movies. Some of her success movies are the â€Å"Bone Collector† (1999) and a 2000 action film â€Å"Gone in Sixty Seconds† which concerns a former car thief being forced to return to his former trade and steal 50 cars in only one night for a crime boss who is threatening to kill his brother. Mainly, Jolie is best known for her acting in a film based on the popular â€Å"Tomb Rider† (2001) video game series featuring her as its main character, Lara Croft.Then in 2003, she gained more success through the second film based on the same video game series entitled â€Å"Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life†. Besides being an actress, she also worked as a professional model in London, New York and Los Angeles. Having Madonna, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Clash and Matchbox 20 as her favourite music, Jolie has appeared in numerous music videos, including those of Meat Loaf, Lenny Kravitz and The Rolling Stones.Not only Jolie is a beautiful and attractive woman, but this respected actress, who has 3 Golden Globes in her hand, is also known for her humanitarian endeavours. She once published â€Å"Notes from My Travels† (2003), a collection of journal entries chronicling her early work with U. N. after she actively been a Goodwill Ambassador for its High Commission for Refugees since 2001 that made her frequently traveling to far-flung countries to draw attention to the unfortunate people in Third World nations.Unfortunately, Jolie's success as an actress and U. N. representative doesn't work in balance with her marriage as all her two marriages end in divorce. On March 28, 1996, she married British actor Jonny Lee Miller whom she co-starred with in the movie â€Å"Hackers† and for whom she attended her wedding in black leather trousers and a white shirt with his name painted in her blood on the back. Sadly, the marriage wasn't last long as they were divorced on February 3, 1999.After that she married to the American actor Billy Bob Thornton on May 5, 2000, with whom she adopted a son from Cambodia, Maddox Chivan Thornton Jolie, born on August 5, 2001. On May 27, 2003, both of them had legally separated with Jolie won Maddox custody. In early 2005, along with public shock on the issue of her becoming one cause of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's â€Å"eternal marriage† end, Angelina Jolie denied public rumours she's dating Colin Farrell, citing the many similarities they have made them wanted to save their â€Å"mutual attraction† best for last.Still in the same year, it has lat er been revealed that all the tidings concerning this matter were true as Pitt's publicist openly stated by early January 2006 that the actor and Jolie were expecting a child together to at the end welcome the new addition to their family, a girl named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, on the night of May 27, 2006 in Namibia, Africa. Two girls with only one boy, the actress adds a son into her and Pitt's clan to make the family whole adopted a Vietnam orphan Pax Thien from the Tam Binh orphanage outside Ho Chi Minh City in March 2007.Back to her acting career, Jolie sure encountered no difficulties in continuing her path on the upper rank of show business as offers of roles kept coming heavily for her, like those for â€Å"Beyond Borders† (2003), â€Å"Taking Lives† (2004), and â€Å"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow† (2004). Though slightly stumbled in the critically panned â€Å"Alexander† (2004), she wonderfully managed to bounce back in her next vehicle, the adventurous â€Å"Mr and Mrs Smith† (2005), when the Fox production scored a fantastic domestic gross of over $186 million in its run.Next seen in â€Å"The Good Shepherd† (2006) then â€Å"A Mighty Heart† (2007), she kept piling up stints into her resume, signing on as the star of â€Å"The Changeling†, â€Å"Wanted†, and â€Å"Atlas Shrugged,† all slated to come up in 2008 while providing the voice of Grendel's mother in â€Å"Beowulf† (2007) and Tigress in â€Å"Kung Fu Panda† (2008).
